Why does Bittrex need my Social Security Number/Social Insurance Number (SSN/SIN)?

When creating a Bittrex account, we will ask you for some additional information, including your source of funds. All Bittrex US customers will also be prompted to input their Social Security Number or Social Insurance Number. So, you may be wondering:

Why does Bittrex need my Social Security Number?

The answer is, as the premier US-based blockchain technology and cryptocurrency exchange, we are required by law to collect your Social Security Number (SSN) / Social Insurance Number (SIN) to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. Specifically, the legal requirement states:

“a record of the person’s taxpayer identification number (e.g., social security or employer identification number) or, if none, alien identification number or passport number and country of issuance, or a notation in the record of the lack thereof.” – 31 CFR 1010.11(p).
